POWER8 finished its IBM end-of-service cycle in 2024. It cannot run anything newer than IBM i 7.4, and 7.4 itself loses standard IBM support on September 30, 2026. After that date, staying on 7.4 means paying IBM's Service Extension for an OS that gets no new features and, eventually, no more security patches.
